On the roof of Austria, not only little people look small. Hiking and mountaineering are national obsessions in Austria. Outdoor shops accommodate specialist needs, but most Austrians are happy just hiking up a hill and looking down to the valleys. Popular mountains can be crowded on weekends. The sheer size of the mountains are reason enough not to ignore them on a visit to Austria: approximately two thirds of the country are considered to be alpine.
