Austria Photo Gallery: Vienna Highlights
back to "pictures"
The "Riesenrad" in the Wiener Prater fair. This Ferris wheel is the oldest in the World (at least when it comes to Ferris wheels that are still in use) and spins since the 19th century, when Vienna hosted a World Exhibition. Such exhibitions were done back in these days to show off Imperial pomp and glory.
The Prater area includes not only the fair part, but also extensive parks and gardens. It was traditionally a hunting and leisure ground for the Royal Family, but opened to the general public for recreational purposes in the 18th century.
