BA-CA Kunstforum - Art Museum & Gallery

The BA-CA Kunstforum is an art museum and gallery in the very centre of Vienna′s first district. Despite of being widely neglected by non-German speaking tourists, it ranks among Vienna′s most popular tourist attractions with more then 300,000 visitors every year. The Kunstforum shows changing exhibitions often in collaboration with leading art museums such as the Royal Academy in London, the Guggenheim Museum in New York or the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Since 2000, exhibitions also include contemporary artists.

An exhibition supervised by Rudolf Leopold made the World re-discover Egon Schiele's work.

The core interest of the museum, which is funded by a major Austrian bank, is classic modern art and the Austrian avant-garde after World War II. There are 1,120 square metres of exhibition space available. The Kunstforum was founded in 1988 and the Austrian star-architect Gustav Peichl (who is also a successful cartoonist) was in charge with the design of the building that occupies a site in the most ancient part of Vienna′s medieval core.

The opening exhibition was the now legendary "Egon Schiele und seine Zeit" ("Egon Schiele and his Era"), in which the private collection of Rudolf Leopold was publicly shown to the then most complete extent. The exhibition toured Europe and was the starting point for endeavours to make this remarkable collection publicly available - an endeavour that eventually led to the foundation of the Leopold Museum in the MuseumsQuartier.

Classic Modernism in Temporary Exhibitions

The exhibitions are usually arranged according to a theme (such as "Myth Metropolis", "Superstars - from Warhol to Madonna", "Gardens", "Red in Russian Art") or a particular artist (Schiele, Kokoschka, Turner, van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso, Miro, Malewitsch, Schwitters, Kandinsky, Lempicka, Chagall or others).

Since the exhibitions are usually of very high quality, it is worth checking what is currently shown if you visit Vienna and you are interested in art. Due to the prominent location of the Kunstforum, there are several attractions nearby.

This applies in particular to the Schottenstift Monastery, just across the road, the Palais Ferstel in elaborate neo-Renaissance style, the Stock Exchange, the Votivkirche, the University, as well as the Freyung Square and the Judenplatz with several museums around.
