Austrian Christmas Cookies: Früchtelebkuchen
fruit gingerbread with Chocolate Icing


4 eggs
300 g honey
240 g rye flour
240 g flour
300 g raisins
200 g chopped almonds or walnuts
120 g candied lemon peel
120 g arazini (candied orange peel)
1 full tablespoon of baking powder
a bit of milk
some dried, grated ginger
some cloves, cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg (grated; try "all spice" blends)

What Austrian Früchtelebkuchen is

Früchtelebkuchen is a somewhat fancier version of the gingerbread recipe given elsewhere on It contains dried and candied fruits and is topped with dark chocolate, which makes the experience of eating it a well-rounded sensual pleasure. The typical spices of Lebkuchen are balanced our with the fruits (which are all typical for Austrian Christmas cooking) and the chocolate.

How to prepare Früchtelebkuchen

Despite of the elaborate list of ingredients, making Früchtelebkuchen is a fairly easy task. Mix Eggs, honey and spices, then add the sieved flour and milk. Stir, then add the fruits and make a smooth dough. Spread it out on a baking sheet and bake the Lebkuchen at 180 degrees Celsius for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Once chilled, add chocolate icing on top and cut the cake into the individual cookies.
